Water baptism is a symbol of what happened when Jesus died on the cross for our sins and we accepted Him as our Lord and Savior. Galatians 2:20 says it best:
For I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.
(Galatians 2:20 NIV)
So, in a nutshell, baptisms are an outward expression of an inward commitment. We are leaving our old lives, sins, issues, and habits beneath the water. And as we rise above that water, we are living in Christ as He is alive in us!
Baptism is a powerful step of faith. It is a public declaration that you have committed to follow Christ. Through baptism, you outwardly express the inward transformation that takes place when you receive Jesus as your Savior. It is the next step after salvation and a foundational part of the Christian life.
Baptism is also an act of obedience to the command of Jesus. Even though He was sinless, Jesus humbled Himself and was baptized—giving us the perfect example to follow.
Then Jesus came close to them and said, "All the authority of the universe has been given to me. Now go in my authority and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age."
Matthew 28:18–20
Baptism carries deep meaning. It symbolizes Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, and it represents the new life you now have in Him. When you go under the water, it signifies leaving your old life behind; when you rise out of the water, it declares that you are walking in the new life Christ has given you.
Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive – right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross.
Colossians 2:12–14
